Electro Acoustic Water Leak Detection
Location with the ground microphone
Strucure-borne sound is not transmitted as well by non-metallic pipe materials. Taking reading at the valves is not enough; the sections between valves must also be checked with a ground microphone. Using the ground microphone at brief intervals enables the leak to be located with sufficient accuracy for excavation. The AQUAPHON© ELW receiver indicates a precise optical comparison of the noise intensities.
The hearing-protection function
Operator protection is integral to the AQUAPHON© ELW. It's a common problem: the test rod slips off the contact point, or the headphones are activated too soon or not soon enough. Another example: some object falls onto the ground close to the ground microphone. Both cases expose the ears to unpleasant sound pressure, which may even permanently impair the hearing. The new hearing-protection function of the AQUAPHON© ELW makes this a thing of the past.
The noise signal is constantly analysed. With very loud noises the sound in the headphones is immediately muffled - and if signals are both very loud and sudden, the headphones are switched off. Once this noise source has ceased the ELW reverts to normal functioning.
The
filter-optimisation function
When a leak noise is detected with the ground microphone but the noise
is too diffuse for it to be located exactly, the filter-optimisation
function of the AQUAPHON© ELW facilitates location to the point
where excavation can begin. Briefly holding down the "Hz"
button makes the ELW take a noise sample with the ground microphone.
This is automatically analysed, and the device then spontaneously sets
the frequency range which makes the leak particularly vivid.
